Garbh Sanskar is a scientific process of giving birth to the best kind of progeny. It comes from the 5000 year old science of Ayurveda, which lays out guidelines on pre pregnancy preparation, care during pregnancy and post delivery regimen.
Hinduism consists of a total of 16 sanskars that human beings will receive throughout their life. Garbh Sanskar is the 2nd sanskar after conception (Garbhaadhaan sanskar). “Garbh” means womb and “sanskar”’ means imprints. The imprints, sacrament, enlightenment or education imparted to a “Garbh” is what we call Garbh Sanskar.
“Sanskars” can also be understood as “transformation”. The process of doing a sanskar is used to bring about a change in the property of something. For example – When culture is added to warm milk, it turns into curd. It’s a “sanskar” performed on the milk that brought about “transformation” and a change in its “properties”.
Similarly, when the child is in the womb, it is “transformed” through the imprints it receives via sound, sight, touch, taste and smell through the mother.
Garbh Sanskar provides month wise guidelines to the expectant mother with regards to her food habits, the kind of literature to be read, the kind of music to be listened to, various activities to engage in for the foetus’ ‘self & brain’ development, prioritizes the mother’s mental and emotional well being, promotes bonding between the parents, self care rituals for the mother and the overall lifestyle the mother should follow during, before and after her pregnancy.
When we think of buying a new car, we do a thorough homework on the kind of features we would want, price range, brand, durability etc. While buying a new dress, we look at the material, colour, pattern, pricing etc. Before making any big decisions, there is always a certain amount of preparation and planning that goes in it.
Similarly, when one decides to have a child, it needs to be planned for. Bringing a life into this world and raising it is one of the most beautiful experiences of human life but the most responsible one as well. Hence Garbh Sanskar!
This 3 month program should ideally be done by the couple together because the health of both the parents affect conception and pregnancy. However it can be done by the mother alone as well. Roughly, every 75-90 days, a new set of sperms are formed by the body and it takes 3 months for an egg to fully mature as well. Your food, lifestyle, sleep, stress, mental health etc during these 3 months affect the development of the new sperm & egg. Hence, it is important that the couple prepare their minds and bodies for pregnancy and work on their own health before getting pregnant. Only healthy parents pass on healthy genes to their child. Program includes:
Once the mother has conceived, the 9 months of Garbh Sanskar begin. The program includes:
